Candidate’s Statement

I have a lifetime of work experience in communications industry R&D, and connections with academia through extensive participation in IEEE conferences and future direction initiatives, especially in the area of emerging technologies. Recent participation and contributions have been on big data, SDN, future networks (5G and beyond), and other emerging technologies such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. If elected, with my background, I am especially well qualified to plan and execute ComSoc’s strategy for industry/academia collaboration. Under ComSoc’s Industry/Academia Collaboration Program, I shall contribute to: 1) establish an internship program between leading-edge companies and selected universities and 2) establish joint exploratory testbeds on emerging technologies such as AI and quantum communications to allow innovations to be tested. I am an IEEE Life Senior Member with a young heart. If, elected, I will serve as a bridge between you and ComSoc, and ensure that Com-Soc’s activities align with your professional interests.

Candidate’s Biography

Chi-Ming Chen has worked 30+ years in the communications R&D environment. He retired from AT&T Labs in 2018. Currently, he is responsible for Business Strategy at InfoBeyond Technology, a communications security solutions company.. He is an active ComSoc volunteer. His current IEEE activities include Executive Chair of ICC 2019, Shanghai; Co-Chair of IEEE Future Networks Initiative (5G and Beyond) Roadmap Working Group; and Advisory Board Member of ComSoc’s Technical Committee on Communications Quality & Reliability (CQR), in which he has been organizing an annual Emerging Technology Reliability Roundtable since 2014. He was a voting member of the GLOBECOM/ICC Management and Steering Committee (GIMS) and served as its Site Selection Chair from 2012 to 2017.
